An England dress is first worn by Harriet Goulding, sister in law of Flag Rags founder Gina Goulding, in 1997 in The
Bitter End pub in Saint Germain-en-Laye, Paris. The outfit receives many compliments, and Gina realises that the dress
is destined for big things. Since then Gina has hand-made a selection of T-shirts and dresses featuring national flags
for women to wear while supporting their national teams. However, this just wasn’t enough…..
Realising that women supporters have not been given the attention they deserve, Gina creates a company called Flag
Rags. This offers women a range of stylish and fashionable ‘country colours’ outfits to wear pitch side, in the pub or at
celebratory parties. These are clothes designed by women for women.
In January 2011 Gina meets Samantha Lloyd in Paris, a Fashion Marketing Graduate who has worked with the likes of
Hilary Alexander, Kim Blake and companies such as Versace, NY. Living with a French family teaching them English, she
gets a job at the Bitter End to help improve her French. Within a week the discussion of the Flag Rags concept has begun and by February the
first samples are commissioned.
The dress has been designed to be versatile. It can be worn by itself, or over jeans or leggings. There are two signature dresses made by Flag
Rags. The first, the bodycon, hugs a woman’s body in all the right places. The second, the trapeze, flares from under the bust.
Quality is at the forefront of Gina’s design ethos. The company sources the highest quality fabric in England and is using a British manufacturer,
who sources within the EU. As British designers, living in France, we aim to provide a truly European product. This is the story of how Flag Rags
was born.
